Free Mace

Jukebox Time is featuring the latest album by Independent Surf-Reggae/Ska-Punk band Free Mace. Known for their scintillating music, the new album titled ‘Better off Bitter’ is a collection of 10 riveting tracks. It starts with ‘Better off Bitter,’ which has a splendid intro and power-packed rhythms that allure us. The transitions are subtle and invigorating. ‘Reality’ features fuzzy guitars with vocals that seem from otherworldly realms. The subdued tonality of the track is impressive. With a superb guitar solo, the paradigm of musicality is quite fascinating. ‘Good Time Girl’ is another peppy number with feet-tapping rhythms. Add to that Mason Staub’s evocative vocals, which craft a sublime tonality. Once again, the track contains the signature Free Mace ingredients (auditory mix!) that captivate the psyche for sure. The up-tempo element is extremely visible (or shall we say audible!) in their music.

‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ gives a trajectory (creative albeit) to the overall flow of the album. The tones are slightly altered, and the tempo is almost similar, yet the melodic arrangement is quite distinct compared to the other tracks in the album. This track showcases the mastery that Free Mace has over crafting multi-genre influenced tones. Do listen to the guitar solo on loop mode, and you will get the gist of what we are trying to convey about their music.Free MaceHowever, the album ends with ‘The Heretic,’ which seems like an ideal auditory culmination of their musical story in the album. The tones are refreshing, and the varied arrangement gives a nod to unconventional tonality, whereas the vocals have more effects that certainly mesmerize. Overall, we were impressed by Free Mace’s new album. Be it innovative sounds, captivating arrangement, or musical flow that feels refreshing – all are included in their album. Thus, we highly recommend this album, which is now streaming on Spotify. Also, three tracks are added to our official Spotify playlist.

About the band: Founded in St. Augustine, Florida, in 2018, Free Mace began as an independent Surf Reggae/Ska-Punk band that provided a window into Florida’s counterculture and alternative lifestyle views. By combining these influences and portraying them lyrically with the use of poetic elements, listeners are educated and entertained. The music comprises unique, yet relatable sounds that push the envelope of mainstream concepts. Predominately a trio led by vocalist/guitarist/producer Mason Staub and consisting of an alternating band, Free Mace also performs as a four- or five-piece group with added instrumentation.Free MaceThrough varying lineups, each performance showcases fresh artistry and improvisation while also staying true to the foundations of the songs. Later relocating to Jacksonville, Florida, in 2020, Free Mace continued exploring a multitude of genres, developing a more fusion-based sound. By experimenting with methods and techniques inspired by varying genres, new ideas continue to be the driving force behind the music. Through this development, Free Mace has refrained from the previous Reggae and Ska sounds of prior releases to pursue more Rock-oriented music.
