Jukebox Time recently got a chance to interview James Hardy aka $ENT in regard to his book The Pain Behind The Pole. We got insights into his book, his source of inspiration and much more!
Q1. Welcome to Jukebox Time! How are you doing?
A: I’m doing well, staying focused and motivated. Every day is another step toward growth, not just for myself but for those I want to inspire. I appreciate you having me.
Q2. Your book is now available online! Please tell our readers about your book.
A: The Pain Behind The Pole is a raw and gripping urban novel that dives deep into the lives of people chasing money, power, and love in a world filled with deception. It follows Mahogany, a woman who’s been through her share of struggles but learns that every dollar earned comes with its own cost. This story isn’t just about the glitz of fast money—it’s about the pain, the sacrifices, and the choices people make when survival is on the line. It’s a story that will keep readers on edge while making them reflect on the realities behind the hustle.
Q3. What motivated and inspired you to write this book?
A: My motivation comes from my own life experiences and the stories I’ve witnessed. Growing up in Atlanta, I saw firsthand the struggles people go through just to survive. While incarcerated, I became an avid reader, and I realized that storytelling was a way to reach people—especially those who feel unheard. I wanted to write something real, something that resonates with those who know the struggle but also inspires them to rise above it. Writing The Pain Behind The Pole under my pseudonym Sent was my way of bringing these realities to life while showing that there’s always another path.
Q4. Any tips or advice for aspiring writers?
A: My biggest piece of advice is to be authentic. Tell the stories that matter to you, the ones that feel real. Also, stay consistent—writing is a craft, and the more you do it, the better you get. Don’t be afraid to take risks with your storytelling. If you have a story inside you, don’t wait for the perfect time—start writing now. Lastly, learn the business side of things. That’s why I started Dynasty Publications, so that authors—whether incarcerated or free—could have a platform that respects their work and compensates them fairly.
Q5. What’s next? Which book or project are you working on now?
A: Right now, I’m working hard on The Pain Behind The Pole Vol. 2, which continues Mahogany’s story and dives deeper into the consequences of her choices. I’m also pushing my book Made to Lead: A Guide Against Gangs for At-Risk Youth, which is something I’m passionate about because I want young people to know they have options outside of gang life. Beyond that, Dynasty Publications is growing, and we’re bringing in new authors who have powerful stories to tell.
Q6. Finally, as we ask all our guests on Jukebox Time, do you have any closing
thoughts that you would like to share with the world and our readers?
A: No matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, you have the power to change your story. Society may try to box you in, but you define your own path. After the Most High, you are the captain of your fate, the master of your destiny. I hope my books inspire people to think, reflect, and take action in their own lives.
